Changing Perspective is a hybrid bike rack, monument, and sculpture. The core idea for the project was conceived of by members of Jacksonville’s African-American community during a public town hall meeting with the commissioned artists. Each of the bike racks points towards a unique site of cultural and historical significance from Jacksonville’s black history. All 11 bike racks unify and sync up to spell the word ‘DUUUVAL’ from certain perspectives. Originally a hip hop sample, ‘DUUUVAL’ is now a major rallying cry heard throughout the city, notably at Jaguars/NFL games. This piece memorializes it’s origins in the African-American community; its site, in an area undergoing heavy redevelopment, ensures that these histories are honored and celebrated.
